Electoral Commission of Saint LuciaNovember 30, 2025Statement on Advance Polling for Essential Service Electors

Must Read

The Electoral Commission of Saint Lucia acknowledges the significant delays experienced during the Advance Polling of Essential Service Electors, namely members of the Police Force, Fire Service and Correctional Services.

This situation arose because, although the number of Polling Divisions increased from two to four, the number of Polling Stations did not.  The Electoral Department had advised the Police that more Polling Stations were needed, however the Police indicated they lacked the resources to expand.

Further compounding the issue, was the increase in the number of Essential Service Electors since the 2021 election, alongside the continued presence of retired officers on the voters list.  This combination resulted in a significantly larger list of Essential Services Electors, thereby contributing to long lines and late voting.

It is now clear that the number of Polling Stations should have increased within each Polling Division – at least a minimum of four in Soufriere and up to six in Vieux Fort, Training School and Gros Islet.

Notwithstanding these challenges, we wish to assure all electors that this situation was unique to the Advance Polling of Essential Service Electors.  The Electoral Department will revisit this matter in consultation with the Police to ensure that such delays are not repeated in future elections.

Essential Service Electors who did not vote during advance polling are entitled and able to vote on election day.

On Monday, December 01, 2025, The Electoral Department, which has general conduct of elections in relation to all electors on election day, has put in place all necessary measure to ensure that the election process proceeds swiftly and without delay.
