An expected increase in cruise visitors is putting traffic, pedestrian safety and waterfront access high on Soufriere’s agenda as the town prepares for the 2026–2027 cruise season.
The challenge is to accommodate more visitors while keeping the town accessible to residents and local businesses.
The Soufriere Regional Development Foundation (SRDF) convened a meeting with police, local government representatives, marine management officials and businesses to coordinate preparations. Discussions centred on managing increased vehicle and pedestrian activity, particularly around the waterfront.
According to the foundation’s October 28 release, participants examined traffic management, safe pedestrian access and security arrangements, stressing the need for agencies and businesses to work together.
Representatives of the Soufriere Police, the Soufriere Marine Management Association and the Soufriere/Fond St. Jacques Constituency Council attended the meeting at the SRDF’s boardroom.
For Soufriere, the season presents economic opportunities alongside the practical demands of accommodating more people in the town. The foundation said coordination would be essential to supporting those opportunities while maintaining public safety and a positive visitor experience.
The release did not specify whether preparations would involve road diversions, parking restrictions or designated pedestrian routes. It also provided no figures for expected cruise calls or visitor arrivals.
The SRDF said it would continue engaging agencies, tourism partners and businesses as preparations advance.
