Saint Lucia wants visitors to venture beyond its resort gates and iconic attractions into the communities where local food, culture, adventure and everyday life are becoming an increasingly important part of the island’s tourism product.
The Community Tourism Agency (CTA) used the inaugural Saint Lucia Showcase International to put that message directly before more than 100 travel buyers, media representatives and tourism partners from North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Addressing the opening ceremony, CTA Chief Executive Officer Dahlia Guard said the island’s appeal extends beyond what visitors traditionally see in destination marketing, declaring that Saint Lucia “has never asked merely to be seen” but “asks to be felt” through the warmth of its people, the rhythm of its communities, the richness of its soil and the stories embedded across the island.
The Showcase, which runs from September 16 to 20, is connecting international partners with local tourism stakeholders while exposing them to a growing range of community-based experiences.
Guard pointed to Saint Lucia’s legislation dedicated to community tourism as part of the foundation for developing a sector in which residents are not simply on the periphery of tourism, but active participants and beneficiaries.
That vision is already taking shape through experiences ranging from ATV adventures through Dennery’s countryside and agricultural and culinary activities to electric bicycle tours through the fishing communities of Anse La Raye and Canaries. Other offerings include encounters with Saint Lucian art, sea moss experiences in Praslin and the craft and agricultural traditions of Choiseul.
The CTA is working with local operators to transform those assets into authentic, professionally delivered products capable of reaching the international market. Guard described the emerging offering as a Saint Lucia built around “recreation and adventure, cuisine, agriculture and intimate accommodation,” alongside art, heritage, wellness and spirituality.
At the centre of that effort are three principles: opportunity, ownership and ensuring that tourism generates greater value within the communities that help define the destination.
For the CTA, opportunity means giving Saint Lucians avenues to transform their knowledge, creativity and traditions into sustainable livelihoods, while ownership places residents at the heart of the industry as entrepreneurs, hosts, guides and storytellers.
Guard said protecting that connection is critical, stressing that “our heritage is our responsibility” and that tourism must create value within the communities that give Saint Lucia its soul.
The agency is also preparing to launch an e-commerce booking platform that will serve as a central digital gateway for travel advisors, tour operators and visitors to discover and book community-tourism experiences.
While the platform is expected to make those products more accessible to the international market, Guard cautioned that technology is only the gateway. As she put it, the platform “brings the journey closer, but our people bring the journey to life.”
Showcase participants are getting the opportunity to experience several of those products firsthand, with Guard encouraging them to taste local food, create alongside artisans, ask questions and listen to the people behind the experiences.
Those personal encounters, she argued, are ultimately what visitors carry home memories of “the person who welcomed them, the hands that taught them, the flavours they tasted” and stories shared beneath a tree, beside the sea or along a village road.
For the CTA, that is where community tourism can distinguish Saint Lucia: transforming a holiday into a lasting memory and, in Guard’s words, turning “a visitor into an ambassador.”
