For ten days, the football pitch, not the streets, will become the battleground for hundreds of young athletes as Saint Lucia hosts the third edition of the Caribbean Youth Challenge Series, a regional tournament using sport as a weapon against crime and violence.
Running from August 8 to 17 at the Corinth and Gros Islet Playing Fields, the competition will bring together youth teams from the north of the island and the wider Caribbean under the theme “Kick Out Crime and Violence.” Organisers are hoping the event leaves a lasting impact that extends far beyond the final whistle.
The tournament features Under-11, Under-14 and Under-17 divisions, creating opportunities for young footballers to test themselves against some of the island’s strongest academies and visiting regional opposition. Among the teams expected to compete are Monchy FC, GMC United, DCYO, Pioneers, ADC Lancers, Valley Soccer, New Generation and representatives from the Marchand Football League, while Barbados’ National Sports Council will add a regional l dimension in the Under-14 category.
But organisers insist the competition is about much more than football. With crime and violence affecting communities across the Caribbean, they say the tournament was created to provide young people with a safe environment where they can build friendships, develop discipline and stay engaged in positive activities while learning from players and coaches across the region.
Coaches will have the opportunity to share successful youth development strategies from their respective countries, allowing Saint Lucia to adopt best practices while strengthening relationships with neighbouring football programmes. Meanwhile, the tournament offers something equally valuable for players—competitive regional football outside the FIFA and CONCACAF calendar. Organisers believe consistent exposure to stronger opposition is essential if Saint Lucian footballers are to develop into professionals capable of competing on the international stage.
The long-term vision extends beyond this year’s tournament. Organisers hope to rotate future editions throughout the Caribbean, allowing Saint Lucian teams to travel overseas and giving even more young players the opportunity to compete against regional talent while representing their country.
The Caribbean Youth Challenge Series is supported by the National Lotteries Authority, First National Bank, Scott Sports and Awards, Golden Sports 758, the Gros Islet Football League, Jason Mondesir and the St. Lucia Football Association.
