When fuel prices rise overseas, Saint Lucia’s reliance on imported fuel leaves the island exposed. Energy Minister Shawn Edward says generating more power from local sources could help change that.
In a statement marking Energy Awareness Month in November, Edward pointed to solar, wind and geothermal energy as options for reducing the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels. His statement left open how soon new renewable power could reach the grid and what it could mean for household electricity bills.
“Energy resilience is national resilience,” Edward said. He linked a reliable power supply to keeping businesses open, protecting critical infrastructure and maintaining essential services when the island faces disruptions.
Edward pointed to the National Energy Policy 2023–2030 and the recently enacted Electricity Act as part of the government’s efforts to modernise the sector. He said the Act provides a stronger framework for investment.
The minister also urged households, businesses and public institutions to use energy more efficiently and consider energy-saving technologies.
