Saint Lucians have another opportunity to compete for a $5,000 cash prize as the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) brings back its popular Emancipation Historical Treasure Hunt, expanding the event after overwhelming public demand forced registrations to close early last year.
The interactive competition, scheduled for Saturday, August 15, will feature 20 teams of five, up from 15 teams in its inaugural year, after interest exceeded expectations and would-be participants continued attempting to register even on the day of the event.
Head of Communications at the CDF, Kendall John, said the Foundation had little hesitation in reviving the initiative after its successful debut, describing it as an exciting way to connect Saint Lucians with their history while offering a unique competitive experience. He explained that the treasure hunt transforms some of the island’s most significant historical sites into interactive learning spaces, allowing participants to explore estates, ruins and landmarks rather than simply reading about them in textbooks.
According to John, the immersive format helps participants develop a deeper appreciation for Saint Lucia’s history because experiences tend to leave a lasting impression. He said the Foundation is particularly keen to engage young people in learning about the island’s heritage and hopes the treasure hunt will become a permanent feature of the national Emancipation calendar.
The event is open to families, community groups, friends and other teams looking to test their knowledge, problem-solving skills and teamwork while competing for the top prize. Registration costs $50 per team, equivalent to $10 per participant.
Interested teams can register at the CDF’s offices on Barnard Hill or obtain additional information through the Foundation’s Facebook and Instagram pages. With only 20 team spots available and last year’s competition reaching capacity ahead of the event, prospective participants are being encouraged to register early to avoid missing out.
