Minister Edward Hits the Ground Running with Islandwide Road Improvements

Must Read

Newly appointed Minister for Infrastructure, Hon. Shawn Edward, has hit the ground running, as improvement works along the Barre de l’Isle, and other critical roadways on the island are currently underway.

The Barre de l’Isle is one of the most important thoroughfares on the island, linking the north and south of the island.

It serves as a major transportation corridor for commuters, commercial traffic and emergency services, making its upkeep essential to national mobility and economic activity.

“The planned works are aimed at enhancing road safety, improving driving conditions and ensuring greater resilience of the thoroughfare,” remarked Minister Edward, speaking on the importance of the project.

He underscored the strategic role the Barre de l’Isle plays in daily life and national development.

“This is not just another road, the Barre de l’Isle is a lifeline connecting the north and south of our country. Thousands of Saint Lucians depend on this route every day for work, school, commerce and emergency response, and we have a responsibility to ensure it is safe, reliable and properly maintained.”

The Minister indicated that the improvement works will address long-standing concerns related to road surface conditions, drainage and overall safety, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when the route is most vulnerable. Other improvement works include the Richfond Highway and the West Coast Highway, Bois Cachet Road and Vieux Sucreux Road.

“Our approach is proactive,” Edward added. “We are focused on improving the resilience of this roadway so that it can better withstand weather events and reduce disruptions to traffic flow. These works are about protecting lives, supporting economic activity and improving the overall road user experience.”

Edward also appealed to motorists for patience during the implementation phase, noting that temporary inconveniences are sometimes necessary to achieve long-term benefits.

The Ministry of Infrastructure he says through the Government of Saint Lucia has reaffirmed a commitment to strengthening critical infrastructure across the island.
