Saint Lucian students are set to benefit from expanded international education opportunities following the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Monroe University and the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC). The agreement signed on Wednesday July 8th, establishes a direct and more affordable pathway to bachelor’s and postgraduate degrees while opening the door to scholarships, overseas study and faculty development.
It allows eligible SALCC graduates with associate degrees to transfer up to 66 credits toward a bachelor’s degree at Monroe University without losing academic credit, enabling students to complete their qualifications in less time and at a lower cost.
Among the agreement’s most significant benefits is Monroe University’s commitment to provide an EC$2,500 scholarship per semester to eligible SALCC graduates who enrol at its Saint Lucia campus within one year of graduating from SALCC. The scholarship will continue throughout the student’s bachelor’s programme, provided they maintain the required academic and financial standing.
Students graduating with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher will also receive an application fee waiver, admission into Monroe University’s Honors Program and access to additional scholarship opportunities.
The partnership further strengthens international mobility by allowing students to complete their final two semesters at Monroe University’s campus in New York while paying the same tuition rates charged at its Saint Lucia campus. Eligible international students studying in the United States will also have access to Optional Practical Training (OPT), allowing them to gain valuable work experience directly related to their field of study after graduation.
Beyond student opportunities, the MOU establishes a framework for deeper institutional collaboration. Monroe University has committed to training at least three SALCC faculty members in areas identified by the college, while both institutions will undertake joint research initiatives through a newly established research committee. Faculty from both institutions will also receive reciprocal access to each other’s library resources, and SALCC faculty and staff pursuing postgraduate studies at Monroe University will benefit from a 25 percent reduction in tuition fees.
SALCC, in turn, will promote the transfer pathway among its students, facilitate regular visits by Monroe University representatives, collaborate on curriculum reviews and continue working closely with Monroe University to ensure students experience a smooth transition into degree programmes.
The three-year agreement reflects a shared vision of expanding access to globally recognised qualifications while strengthening academic collaboration between the two institutions. By combining scholarship support, international study opportunities and faculty development, the partnership positions more Saint Lucian students to pursue higher education and career opportunities both locally and abroad.
