The United States has issued a fresh travel advisory for Saint Lucia, warning American citizens to exercise increased caution while visiting the island due to the ongoing risk of crime.
In its updated Level 2 Travel Advisory, published on July 10, 2026, the U.S. Department of State cautioned that violent crime can occur anywhere in Saint Lucia, including in areas popular with tourists.
According to the advisory, both U.S. citizens and other foreign visitors have previously been victims of armed robbery, assault, burglary, rape and, in some cases, homicide. The report also warns that even guests staying at established tourist resorts have been targeted by violent criminals.
While police officers are present at many major tourist locations, the advisory notes that law enforcement response times are generally slower than those in the United States.
The State Department also highlighted the continued prevalence of petty crime, including pickpocketing and purse snatching, particularly in busy tourist areas. Visitors are additionally urged to remain cautious of scams, aggressive vendors and incidents of overcharging.
Beyond crime, the advisory reminds travellers that Saint Lucia remains vulnerable to hurricanes and other severe weather events. Americans planning to visit are encouraged to monitor weather conditions and purchase comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, evacuation and trip cancellations.
The advisory outlines several safety recommendations for travellers, including maintaining a low profile, avoiding the display of expensive jewellery or watches, remaining vigilant in crowded areas, and exercising extra caution when walking or driving at night. Visitors are also advised not to open hotel or residence doors to unknown individuals and to remain alert while using banks and ATMs.
In the event of a robbery, U.S. authorities advise victims not to resist, warning that doing so could increase the risk of serious injury.
The advisory also reminds travellers to familiarize themselves with Saint Lucia’s laws before arrival. In particular, visitors are urged to carefully inspect their luggage for firearms, ammunition or weapons before travelling, as possession of these items can result in severe legal penalties under Saint Lucian law.
The U.S. Department of State encourages travellers to consult its Country Security Report for the Eastern Caribbean and complete its International Travel Checklist before departing for Saint Lucia.
