Police and Customs officials say a joint anti-drug operation at the Vieux Fort Port has resulted in the seizure of suspected cannabis resin and cannabis concealed inside buckets, the arrest of two individuals, and the conviction of one man on multiple drug-related charges.
The operation, carried out on Monday, July 6, by officers attached to the Gangs, Narcotics and Firearms Unit (GNFU) in collaboration with the Customs and Excise Department, led to the discovery of five packages of suspected cannabis resin and two packages of suspected cannabis hidden within a shipment.
Following investigations, officers arrested Tony Paul, also known as “Abra,” of Soufrière, along with a female suspect. Both were jointly charged with three counts each of importation of controlled drugs, possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply, and possession of controlled drugs.
When the matter came before the Second District Court on Thursday, July 9, Tony Paul pleaded guilty to all nine offences.
The court fined Paul EC$200,000, which must be paid by December 31, 2026. Should he fail to pay the fine, he will serve six years in prison.
Following Paul’s guilty pleas, prosecutors withdrew all charges against the female accused, who was discharged by the court.
The seizure forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement authorities to disrupt the importation and distribution of illegal drugs entering Saint Lucia through the island’s ports.
