Babonneau’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage are being positioned to generate new economic opportunities for residents as the community joins a major tourism revitalization initiative.
The constituency has become the third community in Saint Lucia to benefit from the Community Business Revitalization Project, a joint initiative between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Ministry of Commerce, implemented through the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF). The Babonneau component is being undertaken in collaboration with Babonneau Youth Synergy and The Signature Travel Group Incorporated.
The initiative was highlighted Friday at the Babonneau Tourism Stakeholders Forum in Union, held under the theme, “Babonneau – The Green Land of Good Water: Celebrating Our Heritage, Preserving Our Environment, Building A Sustainable Tourism Future.”
Stakeholders will work with organizations including the Community Tourism Agency to develop tourism products that allow residents to benefit financially from the sector.
Babonneau Parliamentary Representative John Paul Estephane said the constituency already possesses significant tourism potential through its “lush landscapes, rivers, waterways, forests, agricultural traditions, communities, culture and above all our people.”
However, he cautioned against pursuing visitor numbers at the expense of the community’s character, saying the challenge is to develop tourism “in a manner that protects the qualities that make Babonneau special.”
Taiwan’s Ambassador to Saint Lucia, Her Excellency Nicole Su, said experience from the project’s implementation in Laborie and Fond St. Jacques has shown that communities must shape their own tourism offerings.
While development methods may be similar, Su said, “each and every community is different and no one knows better than you, the people who are living here in this community.”
The Babonneau initiative has been developing since project officials first visited the constituency in July last year to explore potential tourism products. By April 2026, stakeholders had established a vision centred on preserving cultural heritage and empowering residents.
In July, specialized folk dance and music workshops were held to celebrate local Creole culture, leading to the formation of the Babonneau Cultural Ambassadors.
The group brings together younger and older residents to contribute new perspectives to community tourism while strengthening appreciation for Babonneau’s cultural heritage.
