New Devices for Teachers on the Table as Ministry Warns Against AI Dependence

Must Read

Teachers could receive more capable digital devices under an intervention being discussed by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance, as schools navigate the growing use of artificial intelligence.

Education Minister Hon. Kenson Casimir disclosed the discussions on Tuesday, saying teachers have called for equipment better suited to modern classroom demands. Any intervention, however, will depend on funding becoming available.

“We want a device that is given to them from the Ministry of Education, that is tech savvy enough to provide the actual teaching capacity that teachers need,” Casimir said ahead of the Government’s weekly Cabinet meeting.

The proposed support comes as the Ministry weighs AI’s potential against concerns about plagiarism and students relying on the technology to do their work.

Casimir said the Ministry’s position is that AI should “augment all your efforts in learning, not make you less productive and dependent on it.”

For educators, the challenge is bringing AI into teaching while ensuring students continue to develop their own analytical and academic abilities.

Casimir acknowledged that this would not be easy, given the increasing accessibility of generative AI tools. He said teachers need the tools to recognise inappropriate use and guide students towards productive applications.

The Minister also pointed to a role for parents and wider society in encouraging responsible use of the technology.
