As thousands of revellers took to the streets for Saint Lucia’s Carnival parade, Archbishop Gabriel Malzaire is reminding the nation that while Carnival is a time for celebration, it should not come at the expense of personal values, dignity and public safety.
In a pastoral message released as Carnival festivities get underway, the Archbishop described Carnival as the country’s largest cultural celebration, praising its ability to showcase Saint Lucian creativity, music and national pride. At the same time, he urged revellers to ensure that the excitement of the season is matched by responsible behaviour.
Addressing the Christian community, Archbishop Malzaire encouraged believers to remain steadfast in their faith throughout the festivities, noting that public celebrations provide an opportunity to demonstrate respect, self-control and care for others.
He also issued a direct appeal to the nation’s youth, encouraging them to enjoy Carnival while maintaining modesty in their dress, speech, dancing and overall conduct. He stressed that modesty does not diminish enjoyment but reflects self-respect and respect for the human body.
The Archbishop further warned against excessive alcohol consumption, saying it often leads to poor decisions, road accidents, violence and lasting regret. He called on both citizens and visitors to keep the Carnival season free from drugs, weapons and criminal activity.
“Carnival should lift the spirit of the nation, not wound it,” he said, urging everyone to celebrate in a way that protects both themselves and the wider community.
Archbishop Malzaire also appealed to parents, teachers and community leaders to continue guiding young people throughout the celebrations, emphasizing their role in helping ensure a safe and memorable Carnival season.
He concluded by praying for a peaceful, creative and incident-free Carnival that proudly reflects the best of Saint Lucian culture.
