28 Migrants in Custody After Boat Intercepted in Suspected Smuggling Operation

Must Read

Authorities in Saint Lucia have intercepted a vessel carrying 28 individuals in what is being treated as a suspected human smuggling operation, according to information reliably obtained by Saint Lucia Daily Post. The operation took place on Monday this week.

All 28 individuals are currently in custody following the interception at sea. Sources indicate the group had already been processed locally and housed at a guest facility in Marigot before departing under what appeared to be pre-arranged plans. Law enforcement officials later intervened, intercepting the vessel and returning the individuals to custody.

Preliminary information suggests the group may have entered the region illegally, with indications they travelled through Grenada, where visa requirements did not apply to them. Authorities believe the movement may have been part of a wider effort to transport the individuals onward to other destinations, including Martinique.

Immigration officials are now working to regularize the situation, as the individuals do not possess the required documentation to enter or remain in Saint Lucia. Efforts are ongoing to determine their status and facilitate the appropriate legal process.

The matter is being treated as a possible smuggling operation, with investigations continuing into the circumstances surrounding their movement and any individuals or networks that may be involved.

Law enforcement officials have not released further details as inquiries remain ongoing.
