With anticipation building ahead of one of the island’s premier tourism events, organisers of the Saint Lucia Tourism Awards – widely known as The GIMIES – have unveiled the top three finalists for the coveted People’s Choice Award.
Following an intense online voting campaign that drew strong public engagement, three standout individuals have emerged as the leading contenders: Akim Francis, a chef known for his work with Bursting with Flavors (AKA 5 Star); Elver Descartes, a tour guide with ATV Direct; and Shervon Charles, owner and stable hand at Unique Stables.
The trio, announced in alphabetical order, have distinguished themselves through exceptional service, passion, and a commitment to enhancing Saint Lucia’s tourism product—earning the admiration of both locals and visitors.
Organisers say the strong response to this year’s voting process reflects growing public interest in recognising those who shape the island’s visitor experience at a grassroots level.
While only three have advanced to the final stage, recognition was also extended to six other nominees who were part of the competitive field. These include Avelyn Joseph of Happy Nest; Heidi St. Clair of St. Clair’s Sitting Services; celebrity makeup artist Iva La Toya Lewis of Glamour Art By Toya; community-based tourism entrepreneur Kirk Elliot of St Lucia by Kirk; civil status marriage officer Michel Gaspard; and vegan chef Ngugi Lucien of Grassrootz Vegan Cuisine.
Organisers commended all participants for sharing their stories and contributions, noting that each nominee represents the diverse and evolving landscape of Saint Lucia’s tourism industry.
The winner of the People’s Choice Award will be announced on April 11 during the GIMIES gala, which is expected to draw widespread attention both locally and internationally. The event will be broadcast live on NTN and across the GIMIES’ digital platforms, with the public encouraged to tune in and participate in online viewing activities.
Now in its fourth year, The GIMIES continues to spotlight excellence across the tourism sector, celebrating individuals whose work leaves a lasting impression on the island’s global reputation.
