A young boy, a student of the Entrepot Secondary School who was seriously injured in Friday’s traffic collision at Cas en Bas Gros Islet, has lost his leg despite efforts by doctors to save it.
The boy was among three young pedestrians struck during the September 18 collision. Police previously confirmed that two of the pedestrians suffered serious injuries to their lower bodies.
Saint Lucia Daily Post understands that doctors explored every available option to save the boy’s leg, but ultimately determined that this was not possible.
Despite the severity of his injuries, the youngster is no longer in the Intensive Care Unit and has since been transferred to the male ward, where he continues to receive treatment.
A young woman who was also seriously injured in the collision remains hospitalised. She has sustained serious injuries to her leg and other parts of her body and has been receiving blood as part of her treatment.
However, Saint Lucia Daily Post understands that, at this stage, she has not lost any limbs. A third individual injured in the accident has since been treated and discharged from hospital.
The collision occurred at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Friday along the Cas En Bas Road. Preliminary police investigations indicate that a white Toyota Hilux and a black Mitsubishi Lancer were travelling in opposite directions when the collision occurred. Two construction vehicles parked along the roadside were also impacted.
Emergency personnel transported the injured to the Owen King European Union Hospital following the crash.
Police have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision and have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could assist investigators to contact the Gros Islet Police Station at 456-3830.
The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has also renewed its appeal for motorists to exercise due care and caution, remain vigilant and be particularly mindful of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
