PRESS RELEASE: Saint Lucia Strikes Down Anti-LGBTQ+ Laws in Historic Human Rights Victory

Must Read

758Pride on Thesday celebrated a monumental victory for human rights and equality in Saint Lucia, following the High Court’s landmark decision to declare Sections 132 and 133 of the Criminal Code, which criminalized “buggery” and “gross indecency” respectively, as unconstitutional. This historic ruling marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s journey towards a more just and inclusive society.

For decades, these archaic laws have cast a long shadow over the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals in Saint Lucia, fostering discrimination, fear, and social marginalization. The repeal of these discriminatory provisions represents the culmination of tireless advocacy, courage, and resilience from LGBTQ+ activists, human rights organizations, and allies across the island and beyond.

“Today, joy rings through our hearts and across our beautiful island,” declared Jassica St Rose from 758Pride. “This ruling is not just a legal victory; it is a profound affirmation of the dignity, worth, and fundamental human rights of every Saint Lucian, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It sends a clear message that love is not a crime, and that all citizens deserve to live free from fear and discrimination.”

The High Court’s decision aligns Saint Lucia with a growing number of Caribbean nations that are moving to dismantle discriminatory colonial-era laws. This ruling underscores the constitutional principles of equality, non-discrimination, and privacy, providing a vital foundation for the continued advancement of LGBTQ+ rights in the country.

758Pride extends its deepest gratitude to all who have contributed to this momentous achievement: the brave individuals who shared their stories, the legal teams who championed this cause, the local and international human rights organizations that provided unwavering support, and all allies who stood in solidarity.

While celebrating this significant milestone, 758Pride acknowledges that the journey towards full equality continues. The organization reaffirms its commitment to working collaboratively with the government, civil society, and communities to ensure the effective implementation of this ruling and to advocate for further legislative reforms that protect and promote the rights of all LGBTQ+ Saint Lucians.

“This is a day of immense pride and hope for Saint Lucia,” the 758Pride representative concluded. “Let this historic victory be a beacon, inspiring further progress towards a future where every Saint Lucian can live authentically, safely, and with the full recognition of their inherent human rights.”
