Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has positioned Saint Lucia’s semi-professional football league as a critical tool in the fight against crime, highlighting its role in youth engagement, employment, and social development during his 2026/2027 Budget Address.
Addressing Parliament, Pierre underscored the importance of sports as a preventative measure against criminal activity, particularly among young people, noting that structured programmes are already yielding positive results.
“We are encouraged by the success of the semi-professional football and cricket leagues, and will continue to provide resources to improve on the outcomes,” the Prime Minister stated.
He emphasized that these leagues are more than just sporting initiatives, describing them as platforms that offer young people meaningful alternatives to crime and anti-social behaviour.
“Those leagues provide a platform for positive engagement, self-development, crime prevention, employment, and opportunity for recruitment by professional clubs,” Pierre added.
The Prime Minister further stressed that sports continue to play a unifying role in society, particularly among the youth population.
“Sports continued to serve as both a developmental and unifying force among the youth,” he said.
Pierre’s remarks come amid ongoing national concerns over crime, particularly youth involvement in violence. His administration has been placing increased emphasis on social interventions, mentorship, and community-based programmes as part of a broader strategy to address the root causes of criminal activity.
The semi-professional league initiative forms part of a wider youth development agenda, which includes expanded grassroots sporting programmes, mentorship initiatives, and investment in community facilities aimed at fostering discipline, teamwork, and opportunity.
As the government continues to roll out its crime prevention framework, Prime Minister Pierre says that sports will remain a central pillar in creating pathways for young people and strengthening community resilience across Saint Lucia.
