Human Rights Day 2025: Attorney Mary Francis underscores dignity, justice and equality before the law

Must Read

As Saint Lucia observed Human Rights Day 2025 on Tuesday, December 10, veteran human rights attorney Mary Francis used the occasion to reiterate the importance of justice, equality and human dignity as fundamental pillars of national development.

Human Rights Day is marked annually to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, a landmark document that affirms the inherent rights and freedoms to which all people are entitled. This year’s observance placed renewed focus on the idea that human rights are not abstract concepts, but everyday necessities that shape the quality of life, governance and social cohesion.

For decades, Francis has been a prominent voice in Saint Lucia’s human rights landscape, consistently advocating for access to justice, fairness within the legal system, and protections for the most vulnerable. As Director of the National Centre for Legal Aid and Human Rights Inc., she has repeatedly emphasized that justice should not be a privilege reserved for those who can afford it, but a right accessible to every citizen.

Central to her advocacy is the principle of equality before the law. Francis has warned that when individuals are unable to access legal representation due to financial constraints, the justice system risks becoming imbalanced, undermining public confidence and weakening democratic values. She has long argued that legal aid must be strengthened to ensure that indigent and marginalized citizens are not left without recourse.

Accountability and oversight have also been key themes in her work. Francis has been outspoken on the need for transparency in matters involving state authority, particularly in cases that involve loss of life or alleged abuse of power. She has maintained that effective oversight mechanisms are essential to safeguarding civil liberties and maintaining trust between citizens and institutions.

Beyond legal reform, Francis’ approach frames human rights as lived realities—reflected in how people are treated by authorities, whether they can seek justice without fear, and whether systems serve the public equitably. Her position aligns closely with the broader Human Rights Day message that rights must be protected and upheld consistently, not only acknowledged during annual observances.

As Saint Lucia joins the global community in reflecting on human rights in 2025, Francis’ advocacy continues to serve as a reminder that dignity, justice and equality must remain central to national priorities if meaningful progress is to be achieved.
