UWP Unveils Full Slate, Demands Early Election

Must Read

The United Workers Party (UWP) has officially set the stage for the next general election, unveiling its full slate of candidates on Sunday while delivering a scathing critique of the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) government. The opposition called on Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre to dissolve Parliament and set an early election date, arguing that the country’s future is at stake.

At a high-energy rally filled with chants, applause, and fiery speeches, UWP leaders framed the event as more than a political launch, portraying it as a movement to “restore hope” and “reclaim progress.”

UWP Public Relations Officer Lenard Montoute urged young people to take ownership of the nation’s direction:

“What is happening here today is more for your benefit and your interest. This is about your future,” he declared. “This party is about bringing hope, progress, and development to this country using the vehicle called the United Workers Party.”

Second Deputy Leader Dominic Fedee amplified the call for change, declaring that the UWP is ready to face the polls:

“Whenever the Labour Party gets the courage to call it, we will take them,” he charged. “We will go to the ballot boxes… and we will register our ballot to say to the Labour Party, Bal fini! Enough is enough!”

Capping the night, UWP Political Leader Allen Chastanet made sweeping promises aimed at easing the financial burdens on Saint Lucians. Among them was a pledge to abolish the government’s controversial 2.5% levy on day one of a UWP administration.

“On day one of a UWP government, we will immediately terminate the punishing 2.5% levy that’s bleeding the pockets of the people of Saint Lucia,” Chastanet said.

“These 17 men and women will move to introduce healthcare insurance for all the people of this country. And all of you will be entitled to $75,000 a year in healthcare insurance.”

With its full candidate slate unveiled, the UWP has formally signaled the start of its campaign ahead of the 2026 general election. While Prime Minister Pierre has not yet announced a date, the opposition insists that the clock has already run out on the current administration.
