The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force Gangs Narcotics and Firearms Unit and the Customs and Excise Department, has dealt a significant blow to an alleged trafficking network following the interception of a substantial cache of high-powered firearms, ammunition, and illicit drugs during a targeted operation at the island’s ports.
Inspector Shervon Mathieu, Head of the Gang, Narcotics and Firearms Unit, confirmed that four suspicious commercial consignments were intercepted during the coordinated, multi-agency operation.
“During the course of the operation, four consignments were intercepted, resulting in the recovery of nine firearms, 1,623 rounds of ammunition, 8.36 kilograms of cannabis resin valued at approximately EC$200,000, and 9.8 kilograms of compressed marijuana estimated at EC$183,000,” Inspector Mathieu stated.
He noted that the seizures align with a growing and concerning trend observed in recent investigations.
“Recent interdictions and active investigations have shown that criminal elements are increasingly exploiting commercial consignments to smuggle prohibited items into the island. These weapons and drugs have been directly linked to firearm-related offences, armed robberies, and wider drug-trafficking activities.”
Inspector Mathieu emphasized that the operation was a critical measure to protect national security and public safety.
“This operation was necessary to disrupt this method of importation, prevent the circulation of illegal firearms and narcotics, and further strengthen border control and enforcement efforts at the port, working closely with the Customs and Excise Department.”
Police say investigations are ongoing and are urging members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to cooperate with law enforcement as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle trafficking networks and reduce gun-related violence across Saint Lucia.
