Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre on Sunday night appeared to give Saint Lucians the clearest hint yet about the long-anticipated election date, teasing supporters with cryptic references to “Monday” and a rallying cry that “the mood is red.”
Speaking at a political rally to launch Keithson “Kiffo” Charles, the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) leader urged supporters to ensure their names are on the voters list, hinting that the nation could soon head to the polls.
“On Sunday, we are on the market steps in Castries Central. And remember, Sunday is the day before Monday,” Pierre said to loud cheers. “And what will happen on a Monday? Because the mood is… the mood is…” he teased, prompting laughter and chants from the crowd who eagerly completed his phrase.
Pierre continued, encouraging citizens to prepare to exercise their democratic right when the time comes.
“Every one of you must ensure that your name is on the voters list, your family, your children, everyone,” he urged. “Because when that Monday comes, and we take that line, on Monday night by 8:30, I want it to be… because the mood is…”
Supporters responded in unison, shouting, “Red!”
While Pierre stopped short of officially announcing the election date, his repeated emphasis on “Monday” has fueled speculation that the next general election could be called for a Monday, possibly within weeks.
The Prime Minister ended his remarks on an emotional note, thanking supporters for their continued faith in his leadership.
“My sisters and my brothers, we need every one of you. We need you, we love you, we love you, we love you,” Pierre said.
Although Parliament has not yet been dissolved, Pierre’s remarks have added to mounting anticipation that Saint Lucians may soon be heading to the polls.
