Castries, Saint Lucia – May 19, 2025
The 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season is officially underway with the emergence of its first tropical wave, which developed off the west coast of Africa in recent days.
Meteorologists report the system is currently positioned between 17° and 18° West longitude, and south of 10° North latitude. It is tracking westward at a steady pace of 10 to 15 knots.
This tropical wave is embedded within the Monsoon Trough — a large-scale weather pattern known for generating heavy rainfall — and is already producing moderate to heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms in its vicinity.
Forecast models indicate that the system is on course to approach the Lesser Antilles by Sunday, May 25th. As it nears the island chain, residents can expect increasing rainfall with a heightened risk of thunderstorms continuing into Monday, May 26th.
While the wave currently poses no immediate threat of tropical cyclone development, the Saint Lucia Meteorological Services is closely monitoring its progress. Citizens are advised to stay informed and prepared, as the 2025 hurricane season begins to unfold.
