Castries, Saint Lucia — The Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA) has announced the heartbreaking passing of one of its most respected members, Dr. Gemma Chery, just eight days before her 48th birthday.

Dr. Chery, a distinguished physician and public health advocate, was widely admired for her dedication to healthcare, especially in the field of public health. Her academic journey began with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing in 1998. She later earned her medical degree from the University of Medical Sciences in Las Tunas, Cuba, in 2007. Committed to furthering her expertise, Dr. Chery obtained a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, and a second Master’s Degree in Biostatistics from Clarkson University.

Her career was marked by impactful service across the Caribbean region. In Saint Lucia, she served as Deputy Epidemiologist with the Ministry of Health and later represented the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in Guyana, Antigua, and Suriname. May she rest in eternal peace.
