CDF Elevates Culinary Arts in Icon Series Tribute to Cultural Icon Chef Harry

Must Read

The Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) has delivered a powerful and immersive tribute to Saint Lucian culinary legend Edward ‘Chef Harry’ Joseph, with a reimagined Icon Series Gala Dinner that placed the culinary arts at the centre of national cultural expression.

Held over two nights, April 24 and 25 at Sandals Grande, the event formed part of the “Art & The City” programme within the Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival, and marked a defining moment in the evolution of the festival’s arts component.

Executive Director of the CDF, Raymona Henry-Wynne, described the initiative as a deliberate effort to broaden the understanding of art within the national space. “When we speak about the arts, it is not just about dance and music. Culinary art is a vital part of our artistic community, and it is important that we recognize and celebrate that,” she stated.

The gala was not simply a dinner, but a multi-sensory cultural experience, blending fine dining with live music, dance, and theatrical interpretation. Each course of the five-course meal was designed as an artistic tribute, with renowned participating chefs reinterpreting Chef Harry’s work, reflecting his life, legacy, and deep connection to Saint Lucian culture.

Henry-Wynne noted that the production intentionally incorporated multiple art forms to bring the honouree’s story to life. “How do you interpret a man like Chef Harry? You do it through dance, through music, through culinary expression. Tonight, we saw all of these elements come together in a way that truly reflected who he was.” She added that the experience was deeply personal and reflective, highlighting the profound influence Chef Harry had on generations of culinary professionals. “It felt as though Chef Harry was in the room with us. The chefs he impacted brought his work back to life, and that is what makes this tribute so meaningful.”

The event also underscores the CDF’s broader mandate to create platforms for local artists to thrive, ensuring that Saint Lucian talent is showcased at the highest level within the festival. “We have a responsibility to create opportunities for our artists, to give them a platform where they can grow, network, and present their work to the world. This is how we tell our stories.”

Chief Executive Officer of the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority, Louis Lewis, praised the initiative as a significant milestone in the integration of culture and tourism. “What we witnessed here tonight is the culmination of a vision—to showcase what is authentically Saint Lucian. This is exactly why we transitioned from a Jazz Festival to a Jazz and Arts Festival.”

Lewis highlighted the event as a demonstration of Saint Lucia’s unique value proposition as a destination. He further noted that the fusion of culinary arts, heritage, and performance strengthens Saint Lucia’s positioning in an increasingly competitive global tourism market. “We are promoting Saint Lucia as a destination with distinctive cultural experiences, things you cannot find anywhere else. What we saw here tonight reflects the richness of who we are as a people.”

The Icon Series Gala Dinner represents a continued evolution of the festival’s arts component, now in its fourth year under the “Art & The City” banner, with a clear focus on elevating local creatives and expanding the definition of artistic expression.

By placing culinary arts alongside music, dance, and visual storytelling, the CDF has reinforced its commitment to authentic representation, cultural preservation, and creative industry development.

As the Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival continues to grow, initiatives such as the Icon Series signal a deliberate and strategic shift, one that ensures Saint Lucia’s stories are told not only through performance, but through every facet of its cultural identity.
