A resident of Montserrat has died during a recreational hike at Mount Gimie, Saint Lucia’s tallest mountain, and a popular hiking destination for both locals and visitors.
On March 14, the individual joined a team of experienced guides and hikers to undertake a hike, and reportedly began feeling unwell during the climb to Mount Gimie, and remained at one of the checkpoints in the company of a tour guide.
The Saint Lucia Fire and Emergency Services (SLFES) confirmed that they received a call for assistance at approximately 1:29 pm and attempts to resuscitate proved unsuccessful. The individual was pronounced dead at the Soufriere Hospital.
The individual was a Trainee Engineer with Montserrat Utilities Limited (MUL) and on island as part of an Engineering Internship Programme facilitated by CARILEC, which provides opportunities for employees of the energy sector across the Caribbean to learn from one another, share best practices, and strengthen the regions energy sector.
The hike was a private recreational activity outside of the formal training programme.
At this stage, the matter is being investigated by the relevant authorities in Saint Lucia. Additional details will be provided as they become available.
