The 2026 Independence Track and Field Championship concluded on Sunday, March 1, after two days of high-intensity competition hosted by the St. Lucia Athletics Association (SLAA), delivering standout performances and renewed optimism for the future of athletics in Saint Lucia.

Staged at the George Odlum Stadium and the Soufriere Mini Stadium as part of activities marking the island’s 47th Anniversary of Independence, the championship brought together athletes, coaches, officials and supporters in a patriotic display of talent and competitive spirit. From the opening gun on Saturday, February 28, to the final relay exchange on Sunday afternoon, the atmosphere remained electric, with spectators treated to commanding victories, season-best times and personal best performances across sprint, middle-distance, long-distance, jumps and relay events.

Multiple athletes secured qualifying standards for the upcoming CARIFTA Games, while several others moved significantly closer to their target marks, signaling encouraging progression ahead of regional championships. Relay teams demonstrated improved baton exchanges and cohesion, reflecting technical development and growing team confidence, while field event competitors delivered powerful performances in the Long Jump and Triple Jump, recording impressive distances that further elevated the standard of competition.

President of the SLAA, Dora Henry, expressed satisfaction with the overall execution and quality of the Games, noting that beyond the qualifiers, the steady improvement of athletes nearing their standards speaks to intentional preparation and growing belief within the sport. She emphasized that the discipline, energy and competitive spirit displayed over the two days signal a positive trajectory for athletics in Saint Lucia.

The Association extended appreciation to its technical officials, volunteers, coaches, team managers, medical personnel, sponsors and partners for their support in delivering a successful championship.
