Soufriere Waterfront Set for Major Cruise-Focused Redevelopment

Must Read

Saint Lucia Cruise Port has officially unveiled bold and transformative plans for the redevelopment of the Soufriere Waterfront, a project poised to position the iconic town as a premier cruise destination in the Caribbean.

At a stakeholder meeting held on Thursday, April 17, 2025, key representatives from SLCP — including General Manager Mr. Lancelot Arnold, Operations Manager Mr. Jahkim Daniel, and Marketing and Communications Manager Ms. Racquel Preville — joined forces with lead architect Mr. Jamal Francis of The Design House and Caribbean Construction Group to present the final designs for the project.

The ambitious redevelopment includes the construction of a scenic boardwalk, a multi-use amphitheater, and the erection of a statue honoring Olympic gold medalist Julien Alfred. These enhancements will be carefully integrated to preserve the cultural charm and natural beauty of Soufriere, affectionately known as the Sulphur City.

Stakeholders from the Soufriere Regional Development Foundation (SRDF), Soufriere Marine Management Authority (SMMA), Piton Management Authority (PMA), local taxi operators, restaurant and business owners, and the Soufriere Vendors Association attended the session and expressed enthusiastic support. Many highlighted the long-term potential for economic stimulation and community pride.

Soufriere’s importance to the cruise sector continues to grow. During the 2024/2025 cruise season, the town welcomed 69 cruise calls, including peak days with up to four vessels anchoring simultaneously. Prestigious cruise lines such as the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and Emerald Cruises have praised the town’s coastal charm, local cuisine, and vibrant heritage.

“The town of Soufriere is indeed a gem of Saint Lucia,” said SLCP General Manager Lancelot Arnold. “Our goal is to preserve its unique ambience while enhancing the town’s infrastructure and making it easier to do business.”

Once completed, the management of the new facilities will remain under the oversight of the SRDF and the Government of Saint Lucia. SLCP has already shown its commitment to community upliftment with a recent EC$10,000 donation to support Soufriere Jazz, a key economic and cultural driver for the region.

Construction is slated to begin later this year, with a targeted completion date by the end of 2026.

The redevelopment marks a significant milestone in elevating Soufriere’s global tourism footprint — a vision rooted in heritage, progress, and opportunity for the people of Saint Lucia.
