The Daren Sammy Foundation has raised approximately EC$78,000 to support its education, sport and community development initiatives, following the fifth staging of its Fairways Golf Tournament.
Held on August 15 at the Sandals Golf & Country Club in Cap Estate, the tournament attracted 57 golfers and brought together members of the sporting and business communities in support of the Foundation’s work with young people.
The event was staged in collaboration with the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) for the fifth consecutive year, continuing a partnership that the Foundation says has contributed significantly to the tournament’s growth.
Golfers competed in the event’s two-player scramble format, with Samuel Richelieu and Julien Gordon taking first place after finishing on a net score of 58. Bertrand Johannes and Keymanie Thomas placed second, while Andrew McHale and Kenneth Mathurin finished third, with all three pairs recording the same net score.
The tournament also attracted several prominent regional and international sporting figures, including CPL Chief Executive Officer Pete Russell, Daren Sammy, former West Indies captain Daren Ganga, South African cricketers Quinton de Kock and George Linde, former Ireland international Niall O’Brien and Trinidad and Tobago Golf Association President Wayne Baptiste.
Individual honours went to Chris Owen and Remy Smith in the men’s closest-to-the-pin competitions, while Jenifer Mendes claimed the women’s honour. Winston Charles recorded the men’s longest drive, with Kimberly John taking the women’s title.
The Foundation credited the support of sponsors, partners, donors, golfers and volunteers for helping the tournament raise funds for programmes aimed at creating opportunities for young people through education and sport.
Silver partners for this year’s tournament included ShopBox and Sandals Golf & Country Club, while Coco Palm Resort, Proven Bank and MM Motors supported the event as bronze partners. UTC, NAGICO and Caribbean Metals Ltd also participated as affiliate partners, with Cap Maison serving as accommodation partner.
Now in its fifth year, the Fairways Golf Tournament has developed into one of the Daren Sammy Foundation’s fundraising initiatives, combining sport with its broader mission of supporting youth and community development.
