Saint Lucia has officially unveiled a commemorative stamp in honour of Olympic gold and silver medalist Julien Alfred, marking a historic tribute to one of the nation’s most celebrated athletes.

The unveiling ceremony, held as part of the island’s 47th Independence celebrations, formally enshrined Alfred’s achievements into Saint Lucia’s postal history. Alfred joined the event virtually, expressing gratitude for the national recognition. “I am honored by my island. To be honored by my island is deeply humbling,” Alfred said. “This place shaped me into who I am — my values, my strength, and my dreams. I accept this not just for myself, but as a symbol of the strength of a united community. I will always carry my island with pride.”

Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Dr. Shandalee Haracksingh, described the stamp as a lasting national symbol that reflects the country’s belief in excellence and perseverance. “By placing Julien Alfred on a national stamp, Saint Lucia affirms that discipline, resilience, and national pride are values worthy of preservation,” Haracksingh stated. “This stamp will circulate regionally and internationally, carrying the story of a young Saint Lucian woman who competed with the world’s best and prevailed.”

Minister for Education, Youth Development, Sports and Digital Transformation, Hon. Kenson Casimir, emphasized the significance of the definitive issue, noting that such stamps become part of everyday national life. “A definitive stamp enters daily circulation. It becomes woven into the rhythm of national life and quietly represents who we are,” Casimir said. “Today, Saint Lucia declares that excellence and achievement are integral to our national identity.”

The commemorative issue features four stamps, each capturing a distinct aspect of Alfred’s journey.

The $2.50 stamp highlights her connection to youth and the inspiration she provides to the next generation. The $5 stamp reflects her strength and confidence representing Saint Lucia internationally. The $10 stamp commemorates her historic Olympic triumph, while the $25 stamp depicts Alfred raising her medal against the backdrop of the Pitons, symbolizing national pride on the global stage.

Designed by Saint Lucian artist Errol Charles and produced by Cartor Security Printing using offset lithography, the collection is expected to hold both artistic and historical value.

The Julien Alfred commemorative stamp will now enter local, regional and international circulation, carrying with it the story of a young woman from Ciceron, Castries, whose discipline and determination propelled her to the pinnacle of global athletics.

The unveiling stands as both a tribute to Alfred’s achievements and a powerful reminder that Saint Lucia continues to produce world-class talent capable of inspiring generations.
