The 42nd edition of Run Barbados was officially launched Thursday evening as hundreds of walkers and runners from across the region and overseas gathered on the island to participate in the highly anticipated multi-day sporting festival this weekend.
At the launch, the Chief Operating Officer of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) Cheryl Carter emphasized the growing importance of sports tourism to the island’s economic development and hailed a major milestone for the event, announcing that Run Barbados has now received full international route accreditation by World Athletics.
“This year, we celebrate a landmark achievement; the routes for our 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, and Marathon are now internationally accredited by World Athletics,” she said. “This means every record set and every time achieved here will be officially recognised and can qualify athletes for World Athletics events worldwide. It is not only a proud moment for Run Barbados but firmly positions Barbados among the elite running festivals globally. It underscores the importance of sports tourism and places our island on the map as a destination where international standards are met and sporting dreams can take flight.”
The COO revealed that the event has attracted participants from a wide cross-section of countries, reflecting its growing international appeal.
“Over the next four days, our island becomes the epicentre of the Caribbean’s running and wellness community,” she stated. “Visitors have travelled from Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Latin America, Kenya, and across our region. Your journeys, often spanning days and thousands of miles, are a testament to the enduring reputation and magnetic draw of Run Barbados. We are truly pleased to welcome you.”
More than 2,000 participants have registered across the various races this year. According to the COO, the event goes beyond competition, serving as a celebration of health, wellness, community, and inclusion.
“Beyond finish lines and medals, Run Barbados unites professional athletes, amateurs, families, schools, and groups alike. No matter your background or ability, there is something here for you,” she said, noting that participants can also take part in yoga sessions, scenic hikes, and access exclusive wellness packages through partnerships with local spas, hotels, and tourism providers.
She also acknowledged the strong support from corporate Barbados and essential national stakeholders.
“Our experience has been elevated by the steadfast backing of our corporate partners. Your commitment continues to enhance the quality of the event and supports the growth of sports tourism and wellness on our island. We also thank the Barbados Police Service, emergency responders, the media, influencers, and our many sponsors whose dedication ensures the safety, organisation, and visibility of Run Barbados year after year.”
This year’s Run Barbados schedule features a variety of events suitable for participants of all ages and fitness levels. In encouraging broad community support, the BTMI Chief Operating Officer praised the dedication of the athletes and acknowledged the role of spectators, noting that the passion of competitors and the enthusiasm of supporters help fuel the spirit of the event. She urged the public to come out, cheer along the routes, and join in celebrating sport, wellness, and togetherness throughout the weekend.
