Saint Lucia’s Tourism Sector Faces Challenges Despite Growth, SLHTA Says

Must Read

Saint Lucia’s tourism industry is experiencing a surge in demand, but this growth comes with significant challenges, according to the CEO of the Saint Lucia Hospitality and Tourism Association (SLHTA), Noorani Azeez.

Azeez recently highlighted concerns about room shortages, ongoing renovations, and the need for sustainable management of increased visitor interest.

“We have had a significant number of rooms out of inventory due to renovations. While increased demand is a good problem to have, it presents challenges in ensuring we do not suffer negative returns from the incredible marketing efforts and investments being made in our destination,” the SLHTA CEO noted.

As hotels work to upgrade facilities, the sector must balance maintaining a steady flow of visitors while ensuring a high standard of service. The temporary reduction in room availability puts pressure on existing accommodations and can lead to higher costs for travelers, potentially impacting Saint Lucia’s competitiveness in the regional tourism market.

Beyond accommodation challenges, there is a pressing need to manage growth in a way that does not strain Saint Lucia’s infrastructure. Increased tourism means higher demand for transportation, water, and other essential services. “It is vital that we sort ourselves out in a way that ensures long-term benefits rather than short-term gains,” the CEO noted. “We must approach this growth strategically to maintain the quality of our tourism product.”

Despite these challenges, Azeeza says stakeholders remain optimistic about the future of Saint Lucia’s tourism sector. “We must continue working together to refine our tourism offerings and improve our ability to accommodate and attract visitors sustainably,” the CEO emphasized. “By taking a proactive approach, we can ensure Saint Lucia remains a leading destination in the Caribbean.”

Azeez says while the goal of those involved in the tourism sector is continued growth, that can only be realized with sustainable development.
