Strong Concerns Raised Over Campaign Conduct Ahead of St. Lucia Teachers’ Union Elections

Must Read

With elections for key executive positions within the St. Lucia Teachers’ Union (SLTU) fast approaching, concerns are emerging over what has been described as increasingly unethical campaign behaviour among some candidates.

Speaking with Saint Lucia Daily Post, candidate Troy Nestor issued a strong call for professionalism, integrity, and restraint as campaigning intensifies ahead of Tuesday’s polls.

Nestor acknowledged that emotions often run high during election periods but cautioned that some campaign tactics may be crossing the line. He pointed to instances of misleading or inappropriate campaign materials and what appear to be baseless accusations, noting that such approaches risk undermining the credibility of the Union.

These concerns are not isolated. Election observers have also raised alarms over what is being described as unprecedented  underhanded tactics, including efforts aimed at character assassination and discrediting contenders, further heightening unease about the integrity of the campaign process.

Nestor emphasized that the SLTU is a respected professional body representing educators, and as such, candidates must uphold standards consistent with that responsibility. He noted that the conduct displayed during the campaign does not only affect local perceptions but can also have regional and international implications, as external bodies closely monitor the Union’s governance and leadership processes.

The candidate stressed that those vying for office must remember that, once elected, they are entrusted with representing all members of the Union, including fellow candidates. He warned that a “win at any cost” mentality could erode the very integrity of the organization.

Currently, three key positions are being contested: President, General Secretary, and Treasurer, while other executive roles remain unopposed. The heightened competition for these posts is believed to be contributing to the tensions observed on the campaign trail.

Notably, Nestor revealed that the Union does not yet have a formal election-specific code of conduct, though members are generally guided by the broader teachers’ code of ethics. He indicated that this gap is now being recognized and will be addressed, with plans to propose a formal framework governing campaign behaviour at the Union’s upcoming biennial meeting.

He expressed hope that members would support the introduction of clear guidelines to ensure future elections are conducted with greater structure, fairness, and professionalism.

As the SLTU prepares to elect its next leadership, the call for dignity, accountability, and ethical campaigning is growing louder highlighting the need to safeguard the reputation of one of Saint Lucia’s most important professional organizations.
