The National Utilities Regulatory Commission (NURC) has moved to address growing public discussion surrounding proposed adjustments to water and sewerage tariffs, stressing that no final decision has been made.
In a statement issued for immediate release, the Commission said it is aware of the rates circulating on social media but emphasized that these figures are neither confirmed nor final. The NURC explained that any tariff proposal must first undergo comprehensive legal assessment, detailed economic analysis, and public scrutiny before a Final Determination can be issued, as required by law.
The Commission is currently in the public consultation phase of its Triennial Tariff Review a legally mandated process that allows consumers, civil society, and corporate stakeholders to actively participate in shaping the outcome. The NURC underscored that public feedback is a core requirement of the review process and directly informs the Commission’s final decision.
Members of the public are being encouraged to attend consultations and submit written feedback to info@nurc.org.lc. According to the Commission, every submission will be carefully reviewed before a final ruling is delivered.
The NURC also reiterated its dual responsibility: to protect consumer interests while ensuring the financial viability and operational sustainability of utility service providers. Any final, approved tariff, the Commission noted, must strike a careful balance between affordability for consumers and the development priorities of the sector.
Officials cautioned against speculation and the spread of misinformation, warning that premature conclusions could create unnecessary concern. The Commission assured the public that once the consultation period concludes and all submissions are examined, a Final Determination Report will be published outlining the approved rates and the full reasoning behind the decision.
Until that report is released, the NURC maintains that a tariff increase has not been confirmed.
