Monroe University is mourning the loss of Mr. Gus Small, Dean of Administration at the institution’s Saint Lucia campus, who passed away this week following an illness. He was surrounded by his wife and children at the time of his passing.
Mr. Small was part of the Monroe U family for 18 years, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to service. A proud U.S. Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War, he was remembered for his discipline, dedication, and his abiding care for both students and the wider community.
His role in establishing Monroe’s Saint Lucia campus has been described as pivotal. At the time the college began exploring expansion to the island, Mr. Small was serving as the government’s Director of Correctional Facilities. Through a training program for local law enforcement, he connected with Monroe representatives, and soon became a central figure in guiding the process. His leadership and local insight helped secure government approvals and identify a site, leading to the campus opening in 2007.
Mr. Small first joined Monroe as a faculty member before moving into administration, where his influence grew even greater. He became a steadfast advocate for students and a valued colleague, known for guiding many as they began their academic journeys.
In tribute to his service, Monroe College announced that the upcoming Saint Lucia Commencement Ceremony on October 19th will be dedicated to his memory.
Monroe University President Marc M. Jerome extended condolences to Mr. Small’s family, friends, and colleagues, noting that he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
