Saint Lucia Marks International Day of Charity with Renewed Focus on Community and Volunteerism

Must Read

Saint Lucia will join the rest of the world this Friday, September 5th, in observing International Day of Charity, a United Nations initiative aimed at highlighting the transformative role of charitable organisations and volunteerism in addressing poverty, inequality, and other social challenges.

Founder of the Do-Nation Foundation, Diane Felicien, underscored the critical importance of charity in bridging gaps that governments and systems cannot always fill.

“Charity plays a vital role in addressing gaps that governments and systems cannot always fill. It uplifts vulnerable communities, provides opportunities for youth, women, and also men, and fosters compassion and unity in society,” Felicien explained.

She highlighted how charitable work has historically been central to crisis response, whether in times of natural disasters, widespread poverty, or social injustices, uniting people across borders and cultures.

However, Felicien acknowledged that economic pressures and increasingly busy lifestyles have affected volunteerism in recent years. Despite these challenges, she said the Do-Nation Foundation has witnessed a growing wave of enthusiasm from young people and community groups eager to make a difference.

> “We have witnessed a strong and inspiring response from young people and community groups who want to make a difference. In fact, many are finding creative ways to volunteer digitally through skills sharing or short-term service projects,” she added.

The Do-Nation Foundation continues to expand its outreach through impactful initiatives, including the SWAG Programme and the Roots Project for Women, both of which address issues such as gender equality, climate resilience, and food security. The organisation also spearheads community-driven events such as mural projects, clean-up campaigns, and youth empowerment activities.

Looking ahead, the Foundation has several major events planned, including the Little Mister and Miss Goodly’s Pageant in April 2026 and the Miss Goodly’s Pageant on November 8th.

Felicien remains confident that the spirit of service in Saint Lucia is thriving:

“At Do-Nation Foundation and through Good Leaves Day, we continue to see persons openly stepping up, showing that the spirit of volunteerism is alive.”

As Saint Lucia commemorates International Day of Charity, the nation is reminded that small acts of kindness, collective efforts, and community-driven initiatives can inspire lasting change.
