NEMO Issues Alert as 2025 Hurricane Season Begins: NOAA Predicts Active Season with 21 Named Storms

Must Read

As the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially kicks off, the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) is urging all Saint Lucians to prioritize safety and preparedness amid forecasts of an active season.

The season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, is expected to see 21 named storms, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The list of storm names for 2025 includes: Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Imelda, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van, and Wendy.

In a public advisory, NEMO emphasized that early preparation is key to reducing risks associated with severe weather events. The organization is encouraging households and businesses to take proactive measures such as trimming overhanging branches, clearing drains and waterways to prevent flooding, and ensuring emergency supplies—like water, non-perishable foods, flashlights, batteries, and phone chargers—are adequately stocked.

“NEMO continues to intensify national readiness through ongoing training programs with our volunteer corps, ensuring a swift, efficient, and coordinated response in the event of any disaster,” the advisory noted.

Citizens are also reminded to rely only on official sources for updates. The Saint Lucia Meteorological Services remains the sole authority for weather forecasts and advisories, while NEMO serves as the official source for disaster-related information.

As the hurricane season unfolds, NEMO calls on the public to stay informed, stay alert, and be prepared.
