Rising Costs Squeeze Manufacturers as Labour Department Pushes Fair Employment

Must Read

Saint Lucia’s manufacturers are facing rising operating costs and supply chain pressures, bringing business survival, fair employment and sustainable job creation into focus during talks with the Department of Labour.

The department met with manufacturing sector representatives on October 14 to discuss industry challenges and the relationship between employers, workers and trade unions, according to a release issued Monday.

For a sector that contributes to local production, employment and exports, the challenge is how to remain competitive while supporting the workers whose efforts help businesses succeed.

The discussions highlighted the importance of recognising workers’ contributions to productivity and business sustainability, alongside promoting safe workplaces, skills development and fair employment practices.

Deputy Labour Commissioner Nicola Lansiquot said the department would continue working with manufacturers and other stakeholders to address workplace concerns, strengthen employer-worker relations and identify practical ways to support the sector’s development.

The engagement comes as manufacturers navigate pressures that affect their operating costs and ability to compete. However, the release did not identify the businesses represented, detail specific workplace complaints or announce new financial support or policy measures.

Instead, the department outlined a commitment to continued dialogue, with industrial relations and sustainable job creation among its priorities.

It also stressed that Government, employers, workers and trade unions must work together to resolve workplace concerns and support a resilient manufacturing sector.

The next test will be how that collaboration translates into practical improvements for businesses and the people they employ.
