Spike in Road Collisions Prompts Urgent Call for Action by Police and Prime Minister

Must Read

A staggering 120 vehicular collisions, including one fatal accident along the Julian R. Hunte Highway, were recorded in January 2025, sparking alarm from law enforcement and government officials.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in charge of the Traffic Department, Charlotte Thomas has issued an advisory to the motoring public, urging immediate behavior change to curb the dangerous trend.

“Reckless actions of a few endanger the safety of many,” ASP Thomas declared. “It is imperative that drivers and pedestrians exercise due diligence. Preventable factors such as driver error and poor vehicle maintenance continue to be major contributors to these collisions.”

Thomas noted that mechanical failures due to inadequate maintenance, coupled with driver negligence, were identified in numerous cases. She emphasized that adherence to road safety guidelines is essential to prevent senseless loss of life, damage to property, and disruptions to public life. To address the issue, the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) has intensified its enforcement measures.

According to Thomas, there will be an increase in vehicular checkpoints, with officers focusing on ensuring drivers carry up-to-date documentation and comply with traffic laws.

“Adhere strictly to the guidelines and regulations outlined in Saint Lucia’s road traffic legislation – maintain speed limits, exercise caution when overtaking, and observe road signs and markings,” Thomas urged.

Meanwhile on Monday, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre also weighed in on the alarming rise in road incidents, highlighting the strain such accidents place on Saint Lucia’s already stretched emergency services.

“If they drove with more care and attention, these accidents would have been reduced,” the Prime Minister stated during Monday’s pre-Cabinet press briefing. “We have to exercise responsibility and return to practices like designating a driver. We cannot drink alcohol and drive.”

Pierre’s comments come amid growing concern over the social and economic costs of road accidents, from medical expenses to loss of productivity and emotional trauma for victims’ families.

ASP Thomas also highlighted the role of pedestrians in ensuring road safety. While reckless driving remains a primary concern, careless pedestrian behavior has contributed to several incidents. She urged pedestrians to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic rules when navigating roadways.
