Pierre Accuses Chastanet of Disrespecting Parliament After Budget Debate Walkout

Must Read

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has sharply criticized Opposition Leader Allen Chastanet, accusing him of disrespecting Parliament and the will of the people after his absence from the 2026/2027 Budget Debate.

Closing the debate on the Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure, Pierre asserted that Parliament’s composition is a direct reflection of the electorate’s decision, stressing that no individual member holds greater authority than the mandate given by the people. He emphasized that the current parliamentary structure stems from the outcome of the last general election, which delivered a commanding 16–1 majority to the Saint Lucia Labour Party.

The Prime Minister argued that Chastanet’s failure to contribute to the debate went beyond political strategy, framing it as a disregard for both constitutional order and public trust. He revealed that the Opposition Leader was given adequate time to speak in the Lower House but chose not to participate, instead exiting Parliament as proceedings were being brought to a close.

Rejecting any suggestion of special privilege within the chamber, Pierre maintained that all members are bound by the same rules and afforded equal opportunity to contribute. He insisted that the Opposition had been granted the same platform as the government to respond to the budget, but failed to do so.

Pierre further accused Chastanet of demonstrating what he described as arrogance and an unwillingness to accept the electorate’s verdict, warning that such conduct undermines democratic norms. Drawing on historical precedent, he pointed to figures such as Louis George and Marius Wilson, who, despite representing a significantly smaller opposition presence in past parliaments, continued to engage in national debates out of respect for the public.

He argued that their example highlights a stark contrast with the current situation, suggesting a decline in parliamentary responsibility within the opposition.

The Prime Minister underscored that any dispute over governance must ultimately be resolved through the democratic process, noting that the electorate has already made its position clear in successive elections and will continue to do so at the polls.
