A man who earlier this week issued a threat against Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister has publicly apologised, stating that his remarks were made while under the influence and driven by anger over the reported killing of two Saint Lucian men at sea.
The initial threat, delivered in a video circulating on social media, directly targeted Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre and referenced allegations surrounding the deaths of the men.
“That’s for you, Philip J Pierre – you send the Americans and shoot my boys outside there, the fishermen, and you are claiming it’s drugs. You cannot win against drugs. You cannot stop the drugs, Philip J Pierre; you going to pay for it,” the man said.
In a subsequent video, he retracted the statement and issued a public apology, attributing his behaviour to intoxication and heightened emotions.
“That was on the influence on drugs and alcohol and then that happened. Like I say again, sorry Philip J. Pierre to you and all your colleagues and all those that feel offended by it. I’m very sorry about it and I hope you’ll accept my apology,” he said.
The apology comes amid growing public concern and speculation surrounding reports that two Saint Lucian nationals may have been killed during a maritime incident outside the country’s territorial waters. The matter has sparked widespread discussion, particularly on social media, where emotions have run high.
Responding to the incident on Friday, Prime Minister Pierre, struck a measured tone, downplaying concerns about his personal safety while reaffirming his commitment to public service.
“In terms of my own personal safety, well, you know, in my business, you will hear people will, some will like you, some will not like you. Some preach the same language with their tongues. Others preach it in a different way,” Pierre said. “But I really continue to serve the people of Saint Lucia, and that’s my first concern.” he added.
Authorities have not indicated whether the threat resulted in any formal charges.
