Castries, Saint Lucia – March 25, 2025 — A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Fort-de-France, Martinique just after midnight, sparking concern across parts of the Eastern Caribbean. The seismic event occurred at 12:53 a.m. local time on Tuesday, March 25th, at a depth of 117 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) was the first to report the tremor, with a confirmation shortly after by the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake. Both agencies recorded the quake at the same magnitude.
Communities closest to the epicenter—including Lorrain, Sainte-Marie, La Trinité, Le Robert, Le François, and Le Lamentin—may have experienced very weak shaking. Fort-de-France, the capital of Martinique, located approximately 51 km from the epicenter, is among the larger population centers where the quake could have been felt. Minor tremors may also have been sensed as far as Roseau, Dominica, and even Castries, Saint Lucia, 115 km away.
There have been no reports of damage or injuries at this time.
