The growing number of vehicular accidents across Saint Lucia is placing increasing pressure on police resources, with response times stretched as officers struggle to manage multiple incidents simultaneously.
This reality was evident on Wednesday evening following a vehicular collision along the Grande Riviere/Corinth Road, which occurred shortly after 4:00 p.m., but was not attended to by police until approximately 6:30 p.m., more than two hours after the Traffic Department was notified.
Despite the significant delay in response, no serious injuries were reported. However, the incident caused a major backlog of traffic along the busy roadway during the peak rush hour period, frustrating motorists attempting to commute home.
When contacted regarding the delayed response, one police officer acknowledged the strain on the department, stating, “We have had seven other accidents to report to and we will respond to Grande Riviere when we can.”
Residents living along the accident-prone stretch of road say the latest incident highlights an ongoing problem and have renewed calls for urgent safety measures, particularly the installation of speed bumps.
Many say speeding and dangerous overtaking have become common along the corridor, increasing the risk to pedestrians and motorists alike. Their concerns are heightened by the presence of a preschool located nearby, placing young children and families at potential risk.
Some residents also report that repeated accidents have resulted in damage to their properties over the years, adding to their frustration and sense of vulnerability.
The situation underscores the broader challenge facing law enforcement, as the frequency of road traffic accidents continues to rise, stretching already limited police resources and impacting response times.
Residents are now urging authorities to implement traffic-calming measures before a more serious tragedy occurs.
