RSS Sets Security Priorities for 2026, Vows Stronger Regional Cooperation

Must Read

The Regional Security System (RSS) has outlined a renewed and focused security agenda for 2026, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the people, sovereignty and stability of its eight Member States and the wider Caribbean region.

In a press release outlining its strategic outlook, the RSS acknowledged that the evolving regional and hemispheric security environment continues to present complex challenges, requiring heightened vigilance, adaptability and strengthened cooperation among Caribbean nations and their international partners.

Central to the RSS’s priorities for the year ahead is the continued fight against illicit drugs and firearms trafficking, which the organisation described as among the most destabilising threats facing Caribbean societies. The RSS said it will intensify efforts to disrupt criminal networks through enhanced intelligence-sharing, joint operations and deeper collaboration with regional and international stakeholders, aimed at reducing the flow of illegal weapons and narcotics across the region.

The RSS also emphasised its commitment to strengthening law enforcement capacity within its Member States. In 2026, the organisation plans to expand support for capacity-building initiatives, specialised training programmes and operational readiness, ensuring that law enforcement agencies are better equipped to respond to both traditional crime and emerging security threats.

Beyond crime prevention, the RSS noted the importance of monitoring the wider geopolitical environment, including developments in Venezuela and other territories that may have implications for regional stability. While respecting national sovereignty and diplomatic processes, the RSS said it will continue to closely observe these developments, enhance contingency planning and work closely with Member States to bolster preparedness, border security and the protection of citizens.

Looking to the future, the RSS said its vision is one of deeper integration, strategic foresight and an unwavering commitment to collective security. The organisation reaffirmed its belief that regional cooperation remains essential to combating crime and creating a safe environment that supports sustainable development.

“As we move into 2026 and beyond, the Regional Security System stands firm in its mission, united in purpose, proactive in action, and steadfast in service to the region we are entrusted to protect,” the statement read.

The RSS reiterated that through continued partnership and shared responsibility, it remains committed to building a safer and more resilient Caribbean.
