Former government minister and academic Dr Gale Rigobert has welcomed the swearing-in of Saint Lucia’s new Cabinet of Ministers, describing the timing, on the eve of the island’s National Day, as deeply symbolic and reflective of the country’s democratic journey since Independence in 1979.
In a statement following the announcement of the new ministerial portfolios, Dr Rigobert said the occasion invited reflection on Saint Lucia’s socio-political evolution over more than four decades, marked by institution-building, reform, and a growing understanding of governance as both a technical and moral responsibility within the context of a Small Island Developing State (SIDS).
She noted that the explicit inclusion of digital transformation and climate change in the configuration of the new ministries was particularly noteworthy, signalling what she described as a “maturing policy consciousness.” “This signals a recognition that technology, innovation, and climate resilience are not peripheral concerns, but central pillars of national development, economic diversification, and state capacity in the 21st century,” Rigobert stated.
According to her, public expectations at this stage of the country’s development are understandably high, with citizens looking for principled leadership, evidence-based policymaking, social cohesion, and effective responses to persistent structural challenges. She added that aligning ministerial architecture with contemporary global realities augurs well for more integrated and forward-looking governance.
Extending best wishes to the newly sworn-in Cabinet, Rigobert expressed hope that the administration would ensure policy continuity and provide steady, coherent leadership.
She further urged the new ministers to demonstrate foresight, adaptability, and institutional resilience in the face of both external and internal shocks, while remaining committed to responsible stewardship and the long-term well-being of the Saint Lucian people.
“On this National Day, it is fitting to wish the new Cabinet every success as they steer the country along a sustainable growth path,” Rigobert said. “Happy National Day, Saint Lucia.”
