The United Workers Party’s (UWP) endorsed candidate for Vieux Fort North, Calixte ‘Kakal’ Xavier, has delivered a sharp critique of the government’s handling of crime, questioning both the preparedness of law enforcement and the absence of stronger national security measures.
Xavier, a former police officer, was responding to the most recent surge of gun violence in Castries that claimed two lives and left others injured over the weekend. His remarks came shortly after the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) issued a statement updating the public on their investigations.
In his address, Xavier challenged the nation to reflect on the deeper causes and beneficiaries of the ongoing bloodshed.
“I want you, the people of St. Lucia and the wider world to think deep. Who are the architects of this chaos? Who are the criminals feeding off our pain? Who are the leaders? And where are they hiding? Who are the victims, other than the people themselves? And most importantly, who are the beneficiaries of this bloodshed?” Xavier asked.
He also raised concerns about whether security forces are properly equipped to manage the crisis and suggested that a state of emergency may be necessary.
“Are they being sent to fight without the tools that they need? Why are we not under a state of emergency?” he pressed.
Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police Luke Defreitas sought to reassure the public that the RSLPF has the resources and expertise to investigate and respond to the escalating violence.
“We want to reassure the public that we have the capacity and the expertise to handle complex investigations. We are committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity, and we are dedicated to serving and protecting our communities,” Defreitas said.
He confirmed that in the Micoud Street incident, officers actively engaged the shooters, leading to two arrests and the recovery of a suspect vehicle. But he also warned of the growing boldness of criminal groups.
“These recent incidents demonstrate the audacity and brazenness of rival factions who, despite our sustained operational efforts to disrupt their activities, continue to execute violent intentions with reckless abandon,” Defreitas stated. “It is alarming that they have escalated such actions, bringing violence into the heart of our city and putting innocent lives at risk.”
As the island grapples with public fear and political debate, both law enforcement and policymakers face growing pressure to deliver tangible results in restoring safety and confidence.
