The political race in Micoud South is heating up as the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) has officially selected Dr. Shanda Lee Harracksingh to contest the next general election in the constituency, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown with incumbent parliamentary representative and United Workers Party (UWP) leader, Allen Chastanet.
The announcement was made on July 25, 2024, and marks a bold step by the SLP as it seeks to unseat the opposition leader in what is expected to be one of the most closely watched electoral contests on the island.
Dr. Harracksingh, a native of Desruisseaux in Micoud South, brings a strong professional background to the political arena. She currently serves as the District Medical Officer for Region 4, which encompasses Desruisseaux, Ti Rocher, Micoud, and Mon Repos. Her medical career spans both Saint Lucia and Barbados, having previously worked at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and at Victoria Hospital—now the Owen King European Union Hospital. She holds a medical degree from the University of the West Indies (Cave Hill) and a Bachelor’s in Biochemistry from Royal Holloway University in London.
In a statement, the SLP expressed confidence in Dr. Harracksingh’s ability to bring effective and people-centered representation to Micoud South. The party also acknowledged the contributions of Calus Moncherry and Gregory St. Ange, who participated in the candidate selection process, thanking them for their ongoing support.
Dr. Harracksingh’s endorsement signals a strategic move by the Labour Party to target a historically UWP-leaning seat with a candidate who combines local roots, professional credibility, and a commitment to community service.
The next general election is constitutionally due by July 2026.
