CASTRIES, Saint Lucia – Joachim Andre Henry, Minister for Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment, has confirmed in a press release dated July 11, 2025, that he will not be contesting the upcoming general elections as the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) candidate for Castries South East. The announcement comes in the wake of the SLP’s decision to select a new representative, a move that has sparked mixed reactions among constituents and supporters.

In the statement, Henry expressed deep gratitude, reflection, and encouragement, acknowledging the trust placed in him by the people of Castries South East. “After deep reflection and with a heart full of gratitude, I accept this moment with humility and grace,” said Henry. He extended his sincere thanks to the Constituency Group that had recommended his continued candidacy and credited their support as a vital source of strength throughout his tenure.

Describing his role as Parliamentary Representative as “one of the greatest honours” of his life, Henry emphasized his dedication to community upliftment and advocacy. “I have stood with you in moments of progress and perseverance… and done all within my power to uplift our communities,” he noted, adding that the relationships and growth fostered during his time in office will remain close to his heart.

In response to mounting dissatisfaction from supporters—some of whom have rallied behind slogans like “No Joachim, No Vote”—Henry appealed for calm and unity. He firmly discouraged any form of protest against the Party’s decision, stating, “I unreservedly discourage any form of demonstration opposing the Party’s decision,” while also acknowledging the emotional toll the decision has had on loyal constituents. He urged supporters to rally behind the SLP and resist giving any comfort to the opposition United Workers Party (UWP).

Addressing the Prime Minister and government officials, Henry thanked them for the support that enabled key projects and interventions within the constituency, noting, “Though there is more I had hoped to achieve, I remain confident that the Labour Party government will carry forward the vision for a stronger, more inclusive Castries South East.”

As he prepares to complete his term, Henry vowed to continue serving with “integrity and care” and reiterated his unwavering commitment to public service. “My love for the people of Castries South East remains unchanged,” he affirmed. “I remain committed to public service in whatever form the future allows.”

The SLP’s decision to replace Henry as candidate has ignited passionate debate across social media and political circles, with many now waiting to see who will be officially endorsed to contest the critical Castries South East seat in the next general election.
