Massade Residents Renew Calls to Relocate Boys’ Training Centre Amid Lingering Trauma from 2023 Murder

Must Read

More than a year after the fatal stabbing of 78-year-old Marcellina Alexis, residents of Massade, Gros Islet, are renewing calls for the relocation of the Boys’ Training Centre (BTC), where the accused—a 15-year-old ward—was housed. The community, still haunted by the January 27, 2023 tragedy, says the emotional scars remain, with fears for safety and peace of mind persisting.

Police charged the teen, from Cantonement, Augier, for the brutal slaying inside Alexis’ home. Though time has passed, her relatives and neighbours insist the sense of security that once defined the area has been permanently fractured.

“We taught them to count and spell. They were our neighbours,” recalled Eleanor Alexis, a close relative of the victim. “Now, we live in fear. The entire Belle Vue community came together after that incident—we created watch groups, we monitor suspicious activity, we’re constantly on edge.”

Residents report increased vigilance, using WhatsApp groups to alert one another of concerning behaviours. Yet, frustration runs deep as BTC wards remain in the area. “We’re shocked they’re still there, more than two years later,” Eleanor said.

Minister for Equity and Social Justice Joachim Henry recently acknowledged the persistent issues linked to the BTC wards, including attempts to abscond, truancy, and public disturbances. He confirmed the matter was discussed in a recent meeting with BTC management and urged staff not to lose hope. “These challenges have existed for over 40 years. Some wards leave to meet friends or attend parties, and either return on their own or are brought back by police,” he noted.

Despite the ministry’s engagement, Massade residents insist the only resolution is relocating the facility—away from their community and the memories that continue to haunt it.
