Soufriere residents are being called to take a public stand against violence today, as the community stages a Unity March under the banner “Stronger, Safer Together.”
The march, organised by the Crime Prevention Unit in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Crime Prwvention, Conflict Resolution, and Persons with Disabilities along with the Soufriere Regional Development Foundation (SRDF) and its partners, will bring residents, businesses, schools and community groups together in a show of solidarity for peace and safer communities.
Participants will assemble at the Soufriere Square from 9:00 a.m. before proceeding along Bridge Street, W. Quinlan Street, Church Street and Henry Belmar Street. The procession is expected to return to the Square by noon.
The initiative comes against the backdrop of continued concern over violent crime in Saint Lucia, with organisers stressing that the march is intended to go beyond symbolism.
The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force and the Department of Crime Prevention will join the initiative alongside other partners.
According to organisers, building safer communities will require institutions and residents to work together, while greater attention must also be placed on supporting young people at risk and resolving conflicts before they escalate into violence.
The peace initiative will also put the spotlight on opportunity as a tool for community development.
Immediately following the march, participants who completed the Business Certificate Programme and Plumbing Course will be recognised during a ceremony at the Soufriere Square.
Organisers say their achievements demonstrate the impact that practical skills and meaningful opportunities can have, particularly for young people, and reinforce the importance of investing in youth as part of efforts to build safer communities.
The Unity March is open to the public, including families, schools, businesses and community organisations, with the SRDF encouraging residents to come out and walk together for peace.
